Alaska Hiking Drop-Off Service

Alaska Hiking Drop-Off Service

Some of Alaska’s best hiking routes do not start at a trailhead sign. They begin on remote gravel bars, alpine ridges, and tundra basins that only a bush plane can reach. If you want to backpack through wilderness without another person in sight, a fly-in drop-off is how you get there.

Golden Eagle Outfitters provides hiking drop-off service for self-guided backpackers. We fly you and your gear to a remote starting point. Then, we return to pick you up when your trek is complete.

What Our Hiking Drop-Off Service Includes

We provide the flight and the logistics. You provide the hiking skills and the adventure. Our service includes:

  • One-way transport to your chosen trailhead — We fly you and your gear to a remote starting point.

  • Scheduled pickup at your endpoint — We meet you at an agreed location on a set date, weather permitting.

  • Gear transport — We can carry packs, trekking poles, and camping equipment, subject to aircraft weight limits.

  • Flexible trip duration — Drop-offs and pickups can be scheduled days or weeks apart.

  • Point-to-point routing — You do not have to end where you started.

For travelers combining hiking with other backcountry activities, our Alaska wilderness drop-offs and Alaska backcountry air taxi services offer flexible access to the same terrain. If you want to add a river journey to your hike, our Alaska rafting drop-off service provides raft transport to remote put-ins. And for those who want a guided experience instead, our remote wilderness float trips offer multi-day paddling with logistics handled for you. If you prefer a custom itinerary with multiple landing points, our Alaska bush plane charters offer that flexibility.

Where We Fly for Hiking Drop-Offs

Golden Eagle Outfitters operates from Delta Junction and Kotzebue. From Delta Junction, we serve the Alaska Range and Interior Alaska, including alpine basins and tundra ridges above tree line. From Kotzebue, we provide access to remote wilderness in northwest Alaska, including areas near Gates of the Arctic and the Kobuk Valley region. How Hiking Drop-Offs Work

Planning a self-guided hiking expedition requires more coordination than a standard flight. Here is how the process generally works.

Before You Book

Contact us with your planned route, the number of people in your group, and an estimate of your gear weight. We will confirm whether your chosen start and end points are accessible by our aircraft. If you do not have a specific route in mind, we can suggest options based on your experience level and objectives.

Choosing a Landing Site

Not every location is suitable for a bush plane landing. The site needs enough length and surface quality for the aircraft to land and take off safely. Gravel bars, tundra strips, and established backcountry airstrips are common options. If you have a specific site in mind, we will evaluate whether it is feasible. When conditions are uncertain, we may recommend an alternative.

Scheduling the Pickup

We agree on a pickup location and date, along with a contingency window. Because weather in Alaska can delay flights with little notice, building extra days into your itinerary is strongly recommended. If weather prevents pickup, we will reschedule as soon as conditions allow.

What to Bring

We do not provide hiking or camping gear. You are responsible for all equipment needed for your trip. Essential items for most remote Alaska hiking expeditions include:

  • Backpack and shelter — Tent or bivy, sleeping bag, and pad rated for the conditions

  • Food and water treatment — Enough for your entire trip, plus emergency rations

  • Navigation tools — Map, compass, and GPS

  • Communication device — Satellite messenger or satellite phone

  • First aid and repair kit — Including items for gear repair

  • Weather-appropriate clothing — Layers, rain gear, and sturdy footwear

  • Bear protection — Bear spray and proper food storage

For anglers who want to fish along their hiking route, our Fly-In Fishing Alaska and Alaska World-Class Fishing pages cover species and access options. If you are interested in combining your hike with wildlife viewing, our Alaska wildlife viewing tours offer an aerial perspective on the same landscape. For a guided aerial experience without the hiking commitment, our Alaska glacier tours provide landing and exploration on the Trident Glacier.

Weather and Flexibility

Alaska weather is unpredictable. Fog, wind, and low clouds can delay or cancel flights with little notice. This affects both drop-offs and pickups. A flight that cannot depart safely on your scheduled day may be delayed by hours or days.

We strongly recommend building extra days into your itinerary on both ends of your trip. If you are planning a seven-day hike, consider planning for nine or ten days of food and supplies. That way, a weather delay does not put you in a difficult position.

Why Fly With Golden Eagle Outfitters

Golden Eagle Outfitters is a family-run operation with deep roots in Alaska. We are second and third generation Alaskans with a lifelong connection to this land. Our pilots have flown these routes for years and know the terrain, weather patterns, and landing sites that make remote hiking access possible. We are not a large commercial airline. Instead, we are a small, experienced team that treats every flight as a privilege.

Beyond hiking drop-offs, we offer Alaska National Park Tours to some of the most remote parks in the state. Our Alaska bush plane charters provide custom flight logistics for any expedition. For travelers seeking other aerial experiences, our Alaska flightseeing tours and Alaska glacier tours offer different ways to see the Alaska Range from above. If you are departing from Interior Alaska, our Fairbanks flightseeing tours and Denali flightseeing tours provide additional aerial perspectives on the region. And for those who want to see wildlife from the air, our Alaska wildlife viewing tours offer a different kind of aerial experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I be dropped at one location and picked up at another?

Yes. Point-to-point trips are common for hiking expeditions. You can start at one location and end at another, as long as both sites are accessible and the pickup location is agreed in advance.

How much gear can I bring?

Weight limits vary by aircraft. When you contact us, let us know your group size and an estimate of your total gear weight. We will match you with the right aircraft. For larger loads, we may need to make multiple trips.

What happens if I am not at the pickup location on time?

If you are delayed, it is important to communicate with us as soon as possible. Satellite messenger devices can be used to send updates. If we arrive for pickup and you are not there, we will wait as long as safely possible. However, we may need to depart and return later. Additional flight time may be billed.

What if the weather prevents my pickup?

Weather delays are common in Alaska. We will reschedule your pickup as soon as conditions allow. Building extra food and supplies into your trip plan is strongly recommended.

Do you offer guided hiking trips?

We provide transportation, not guiding. Our drop-off service is designed for self-guided hikers. If you are looking for a guided experience, our remote wilderness float trips offer guided multi-day paddling. Contact us to discuss options or recommendations.

Can I combine hiking with other activities?

Yes. Many of our customers combine hiking with camping, fishing, or photography. Our Alaska wilderness drop-offs can accommodate multi-activity itineraries. Our Alaska photography flightseeing tours are ideal for photographers who want aerial access to remote locations. For winter trips, our Alaska backcountry skiing and snowboarding services offer access to remote terrain on skis or splitboards.
