Alaska Rafting Drop-Off Service
Alaska’s best rivers do not start at a parking lot. They begin in places that only a bush plane can reach — gravel bars in the middle of nowhere, remote lake shores, tundra stretches that look like a different planet. If you want to run a wilderness river under your own power, a fly-in drop-off is how you get there.
Golden Eagle Outfitters provides rafting drop-off service for self-guided paddlers. We fly you, your raft, and your gear to a remote put-in point. Then, we return to pick you up downstream when your expedition is complete.
What Our Rafting Drop-Off Service Includes
We provide the flight and the logistics. You provide the paddling skills and the adventure. Our service includes:
-
One-way transport to your chosen put-in — We fly you and your raft to a remote river access point.
-
Scheduled pickup at your take-out — We meet you downstream on an agreed date, weather permitting.
-
Raft and gear transport — We can carry rafts, kayaks, paddles, frames, and expedition gear, subject to aircraft weight limits.
-
Flexible trip duration — Drop-offs and pickups can be scheduled days or weeks apart.
For travelers who prefer a guided experience, our remote wilderness float trips offer multi-day paddling with logistics handled for you. If you want to combine rafting with other backcountry activities, our Alaska wilderness drop-offs and Alaska backcountry air taxi services offer flexible access to the same terrain. For those seeking a custom itinerary rather than a simple point-to-point drop, our Alaska bush plane charters provide additional flexibility.
Rivers and Regions We Serve
Golden Eagle Outfitters operates from Delta Junction and Kotzebue. From Delta Junction, we serve rivers in the Alaska Range and Interior Alaska. From Kotzebue, we provide access to remote rivers in northwest Alaska, including waterways near the national parks and preserves. Learn more about our Kotzebue air taxi service for northwest access.
Popular rafting destinations include rivers that flow through Gates of the Arctic and the surrounding wilderness areas. The Kobuk Valley region also offers remote river access for experienced paddlers. If you have a specific river in mind, contact us to discuss access options and landing sites.
How Rafting Drop-Offs Work
Planning a self-guided rafting expedition requires more coordination than a standard flight. Here is how the process generally works.
Before You Book
Contact us with your planned route, the number of people in your group, and an estimate of your gear weight. We will confirm whether your chosen put-in and take-out points are accessible by our aircraft. If you do not have a specific route in mind, we can suggest options based on your experience level and objectives.
Transporting Your Raft
We can transport inflatable rafts, packrafts, and kayaks, subject to weight and balance limits. Rafts should be deflated and packed for transport. Let us know your raft type and dimensions when you book so we can match you with the right aircraft.
Scheduling the Pickup
We agree on a take-out location and a pickup date, along with a contingency window. Because weather in Alaska can delay flights with little notice, building extra days into your itinerary is strongly recommended. If weather prevents pickup, we will reschedule as soon as conditions allow.
What to Bring
We do not provide rafting equipment or camping gear. You are responsible for all equipment needed for your trip. Essential items for most remote Alaska rafting expeditions include:
-
Raft or kayak — Deflated and packed for transport
-
Paddles and safety equipment — Including helmets and PFDs
-
Camping gear — Tent, sleeping system, and cooking supplies
-
Food and water treatment — Enough for your entire trip, plus emergency rations
-
Weather-appropriate clothing — Layers, rain gear, and river footwear
-
Navigation tools — Map, compass, and GPS
-
Communication device — Satellite messenger or satellite phone
For fishing opportunities along your route, our Fly-In Fishing Alaska and Alaska World-Class Fishing pages cover species and access options. Anglers who want to combine rafting with remote fishing will find detailed information on both pages.
Weather and Flexibility
Alaska weather is unpredictable. Fog, wind, and low clouds can delay or cancel flights with little notice. This affects both drop-offs and pickups. A flight that cannot depart safely on your scheduled day may be delayed by hours or days.
We strongly recommend building extra days into your itinerary on both ends of your trip. If you are planning a seven-day float, consider planning for nine or ten days of food and supplies. That way, a weather delay does not put you in a difficult position.
Why Fly With Golden Eagle Outfitters
Golden Eagle Outfitters is a family-run operation with deep roots in Alaska. We are second and third generation Alaskans with a lifelong connection to this land. Our pilots have flown these routes for years and know the terrain, weather patterns, and landing sites that make remote river access possible. We are not a large commercial airline. Instead, we are a small, experienced team that treats every flight as a privilege.
Beyond rafting drop-offs, we offer Alaska National Park Tours to some of the most remote parks in the state. Our Alaska bush plane charters provide custom flight logistics for any expedition. For travelers seeking other aerial experiences, our Alaska flightseeing tours and Alaska glacier tours offer different ways to see the Alaska Range from above. If you are interested in wildlife viewing along your route, our Alaska wildlife viewing tours provide an aerial perspective on the same landscape.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I bring my own raft?
Yes. We can transport inflatable rafts, packrafts, and kayaks, subject to aircraft weight and balance limits. Let us know your raft type and packed dimensions when you book.
How much gear can I bring?
Weight limits vary by aircraft. When you contact us, let us know your group size and an estimate of your total gear weight. We will match you with the right aircraft. For larger loads, we may need to make multiple trips.
Can you pick me up at a different location than where you dropped me?
Yes. Point-to-point trips are common for river expeditions. You can be dropped at one location and picked up at another, as long as both sites are accessible and the take-out is agreed in advance.
What happens if I am not at the take-out on time?
If you are delayed, it is important to communicate with us as soon as possible. Satellite messenger devices can be used to send updates. If we arrive for pickup and you are not there, we will wait as long as safely possible. However, we may need to depart and return later. Additional flight time may be billed.
What if the weather prevents my pickup?
Weather delays are common in Alaska. We will reschedule your pickup as soon as conditions allow. Building extra food and supplies into your trip plan is strongly recommended.
Do you offer guided rafting trips?
Our remote wilderness float trips offer guided multi-day paddling experiences. Contact us to discuss options for guided versus self-guided trips.
Can I combine rafting with other backcountry activities?
Yes. Many of our customers combine rafting with hiking, camping, or fishing. Our Alaska wilderness drop-offs and Alaska backcountry air taxi services can accommodate multi-activity itineraries. For winter river trips, our Alaska backcountry skiing and snowboarding services offer access to remote terrain.
