Alaska Wilderness Drop-Offs

Alaska Wilderness Drop-Offs

Alaska has millions of acres of wilderness with no roads, no trails, and no way in except by air. If your goal is to hike, camp, hunt, fish, or float in a place far from other people, a wilderness drop-off is how you get there. Golden Eagle Outfitters provides custom air transport to remote landing sites across Alaska. We fly you and your gear in, then return for pickup when your trip is done.

This is not a guided tour. It is not a fixed itinerary. Instead, it is transportation to the places you want to go, on a schedule that fits your expedition.

What Is a Wilderness Drop-Off?

A wilderness drop-off is a flight that takes you and your equipment to a remote landing site. That site might be a gravel bar, a tundra strip, a lakeshore, or a mountain airstrip. Then, the plane leaves you there to pursue your own adventure. Unlike a flightseeing tour that returns you to your starting point the same day, a drop-off is one-way. You stay in the field for as long as your trip requires, and we return to pick you up when you are ready.

Backpackers, hunters, anglers, paddlers, and photographers use this service. All of them need access to terrain that cannot be reached on foot or by road. Because the landing sites are often unmarked, they look little different from the surrounding landscape. Pilots who fly these routes know how to identify safe landing areas. In addition, they understand the unique challenges of off-airport operations.

What Our Drop-Off Service Includes

We provide the flight, the landing, and the return pickup. Everything else is up to you. Our service includes:

  • One-way transport to your chosen destination — We fly you and your gear from a departure point to a remote landing site.

  • Scheduled pickup on an agreed date — We return to the same location to bring you back, weather permitting.

  • Gear and cargo transport — We can carry packs, canoes, rafts, hunting equipment, and expedition supplies, subject to aircraft weight limits.

  • Flexible timing — Drop-offs and pickups can be scheduled days or weeks apart.

  • Custom landing sites — If you have a specific location in mind, we can discuss whether it is accessible by our aircraft.

For travelers combining a drop-off with a river journey, our remote wilderness float trips offer additional logistics support. Anglers seeking remote fishing access can learn more about our Alaska World-Class Fishing options. For winter adventures, we offer Alaska backcountry skiing and snowboarding drop-offs with ski-equipped aircraft.

Common Uses for Wilderness Drop-Offs

Travelers hire drop-offs for a wide range of Alaska trips. Some of the most common include:

  • Backpacking and hiking — Get dropped at a trailhead or alpine basin and picked up at a different location days later.

  • Camping expeditions — Access remote lakeshores or riverbanks for multi-day wilderness camping.

  • Float trips — Transport rafts, kayaks, and gear to a remote river put-in.

  • Hunting — Reach remote hunting areas without a long overland approach.

  • Fishing — Access rivers and lakes that see very little pressure.

  • Photography — Fly into locations that offer unique light, wildlife, or landscapes.

  • National park exploration — Visit parks like Gates of the Arctic and Kobuk Valley that have no road access.

How Drop-Off Scheduling Works

Planning a drop-off requires more coordination than booking a standard flight. Here is how the process generally works.

Before You Book

Contact us with your planned route, the number of people in your group, and an estimate of your gear weight. We will confirm whether your chosen destination is accessible by our aircraft. In addition, we will discuss the best departure point. If you do not have a specific landing site in mind, we can suggest areas based on your objectives.

Choosing a Landing Site

Not every location is suitable for a bush plane landing. The site needs enough length and surface quality for the aircraft to land and take off safely. Gravel bars, tundra strips, and established backcountry airstrips are common options. If you have a specific site in mind, we will evaluate whether it is feasible. When conditions are uncertain, we may recommend an alternative.

Scheduling the Pickup

We agree on a pickup date and a contingency window. Because weather in Alaska can delay flights with little notice, building flexibility into your schedule is strongly recommended. If weather prevents pickup on the scheduled day, we will reschedule as soon as conditions allow.

What to Expect on Drop-Off Day

At the Departure Point

Arrive with your gear packed, weighed, and ready to load. We will conduct a weight and balance check and brief you on the flight. Then, we depart when conditions allow. For larger groups or heavy gear loads, we may need to make multiple trips.

The Flight

Your pilot will fly you to your destination. The route will take advantage of the terrain and weather conditions. Depending on the distance and the aircraft, the flight may take from 30 minutes to several hours.

The Landing

Landing at a remote site is different from landing at an airport. Before committing to a landing, your pilot will inspect the site. This includes looking for rocks, soft spots, and obstacles. Once on the ground, you will unload your gear quickly so the aircraft can depart.

What to Bring

We do not provide camping, hunting, or fishing gear. You are responsible for all equipment needed for your trip. Essential items for most wilderness drop-offs include:

  • Shelter and sleeping system — Tent, sleeping bag, and pad rated for the conditions.

  • Food and water treatment — Enough for your entire trip, plus emergency rations.

  • Navigation tools — Map, compass, and GPS.

  • Communication device — Satellite messenger or satellite phone.

  • First aid and repair kit — Including items for gear repair.

  • Weather-appropriate clothing — Layers, rain gear, and insulation.

If you are planning a trip that involves glacier travel or technical terrain, additional equipment and experience are required. Let us know what kind of trip you are planning, and we can discuss logistics and any limitations.

Weather and Flexibility

Alaska weather is unpredictable. Fog, wind, and low clouds can delay or cancel flights with little notice. This affects both drop-offs and pickups. A flight that cannot depart safely on your scheduled day may be delayed by hours or days.

We strongly recommend building extra days into your itinerary on both ends of your trip. If you are planning a seven-day expedition, for example, consider planning for nine or ten days of food and supplies. That way, a weather delay does not put you in a difficult position.

We monitor conditions closely and communicate with you about timing and options. When weather prevents a pickup, we will reschedule as soon as conditions allow.

Why Fly With Golden Eagle Outfitters

Golden Eagle Outfitters is a family-run operation with deep roots in Alaska. We are second and third generation Alaskans with a lifelong connection to this land. Our pilots have flown these routes for years and know the terrain, weather patterns, and landing sites that make remote access possible. We are not a large commercial airline. Instead, we are a small, experienced team. We treat every flight as a privilege and every passenger as a guest in our backyard.

Beyond wilderness drop-offs, we offer Alaska National Park Tours to some of the most remote parks in the state. Our Alaska flightseeing tours provide a different way to experience the landscape. On those trips, you see the wilderness from the air and return to your starting point the same day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I choose my own landing site?

In most cases, yes. However, the site must be safe and suitable for our aircraft. If you have a specific location in mind, share the coordinates or a description with us when you book. We will evaluate whether it is feasible. If not, we can suggest alternatives.

How much gear can I bring?

Weight limits vary by aircraft. When you contact us, let us know your group size and an estimate of your gear weight. We will match you with the right aircraft. For larger loads, we may need to make multiple trips.

Can you pick me up at a different location than where you dropped me?

Yes. Point-to-point trips are common. You can be dropped at one location and picked up at another, as long as both sites are accessible and the pickup location is agreed in advance.

What happens if I am not at the pickup location on time?

If you are delayed, it is important to communicate with us as soon as possible. Satellite messenger devices can be used to send updates. If we arrive for pickup and you are not there, we will wait as long as safely possible. However, we may need to depart and return later. Additional flight time may be billed.

What if the weather prevents my pickup?

Weather delays are common in Alaska. We will reschedule your pickup as soon as conditions allow. Building extra food and supplies into your trip plan is strongly recommended.

Do you offer drop-offs in winter?

We offer winter drop-offs for backcountry skiing and snowboarding with ski-equipped aircraft. Contact us to discuss your winter plans and equipment requirements.
