Alaska Backcountry Skiing

Alaska Backcountry Skiing

Alaska’s mountain ranges hold some of the most epic backcountry skiing and snowboarding terrain on the planet. Untracked powder, towering peaks, and glacier systems that stretch for miles. The best part? No crowds. No lifts. Just you, your crew, and miles of raw vertical.

Golden Eagle Outfitters provides fly-in access to this terrain. We use specialized ski-equipped bush planes to drop you exactly where you need to be. That might be a remote glacier, a windswept col, or a sheltered alpine bowl. Whether you are planning a single-day drop or a multi-day basecamp mission, our pilots are experienced in glacier landings and steep terrain operations.

Terrain for Every Level of Skier

From the sweeping slopes of the Eastern Alaska Range to the technical spines of unnamed ridgelines, Golden Eagle Outfitters gives you direct access to mountains few have ever skied. With terrain suitable for intermediate ski tourers to expert-level ski mountaineers, we tailor every drop to your crew’s experience and objective.

You might find:

  • Long powder runs off high ridges

  • Steep couloirs and glacier descents

  • Expedition-style multi-day ski tours

  • Snowboard-friendly alpine bowls

  • Technical ski mountaineering routes

For those interested in combining a ski drop-off with other backcountry activities, our Alaska wilderness drop-offs offer access for hiking and camping in the same terrain. Our Alaska backcountry air taxi service provides the flight logistics for any remote Alaska adventure. For snowboarders, our Alaska backcountry snowboarding options offer the same access with terrain suited to splitboarding.

How Fly-In Ski Access Works

This is not your typical resort-access tour. We use specialized ski-equipped bush planes to get you exactly where you need to be. Fly in. Set up camp. Spend days exploring untouched terrain few humans have ever seen, much less skied.

Our service includes:

  • One-way flight to your ski destination — We fly you and your gear to a remote glacier, alpine basin, or mountain landing site.

  • Scheduled pickup on an agreed date — We return to the same location to bring you back, weather permitting.

  • Gear transport — We can carry packs, skis, splitboards, and expedition equipment, subject to aircraft weight limits.

  • Multi-day support — For basecamp trips, we can arrange logistics and remain on-call for pickup.

Ski Season: October Through May

Thanks to Alaska’s extreme latitude and massive glaciated terrain, you can backcountry ski here for over half the year. Here is a rough guide:

  • October–January: Cold, dry powder. Crisp conditions and shorter days.

  • February–March: Longer daylight, stable snowpack, perfect for ski mountaineering and steeper lines.

  • April–May: High glacier skiing under the midnight sun. A surreal, bucket-list experience.

A third-party listing also notes that winter sports access may be available from February through August. Contact us to discuss your specific timing and objectives.

Basecamps in the Sky

Want to extend your stay? We offer multi-day and expedition-style trips where you set up basecamp right on the glacier. Spend your days exploring new lines, summiting nearby peaks, or lapping powdery chutes.

Your trip can be fully self-supported or assisted. Bring your own guide or work with ours. Either way, we will fly you in, make sure you are set up safely, and stay on-call for pickup.

For those interested in a different kind of Alaska Range experience, our Alaska glacier tours offer a more relaxed landing and hiking experience on the Trident Glacier. If you want to combine ski access with fishing, our Fly-In Fishing Alaska options open up remote rivers and lakes.

What You Will Need

We recommend you come prepared for a self-sufficient expedition unless otherwise arranged. Essentials include:

  • Avalanche safety gear — Beacon, shovel, and probe

  • Touring setup — AT skis or splitboard, skins, and crampons if needed

  • Camping gear — Tent, sleeping system, glacier stove, and food for the duration

  • Satellite communication device — For emergency contact and pickup coordination

  • Glacier travel gear — Rope, harness, and crevasse rescue equipment if traveling on glaciers

Let us know what kind of trip you are planning. We can help with logistics and safety support.

Wildlife in the High Country

As you tour the high country, do not be surprised to spot distant wildlife far below. Caribou winding through the valleys, Dall sheep on the cliffs, or even the occasional bear stirring from its den. This is true backcountry skiing—remote, silent, powerful. For travelers interested in combining ski access with wildlife viewing, our Alaska wildlife viewing tours offer a different perspective on the same landscape.

Why Fly With Golden Eagle Outfitters

Golden Eagle Outfitters is a family-run operation with deep roots in Alaska. We are second and third generation Alaskans with a lifelong connection to this land. Our pilots have decades of experience flying in Alaska’s toughest terrain. We are not a large commercial tour company. Instead, we are a small, experienced team that treats every flight as a privilege.

Beyond backcountry skiing, we offer Alaska National Park Tours to some of the most remote parks in the state. Our Alaska bush plane charters provide custom flight logistics for any expedition. For travelers departing from Interior Alaska, our Fairbanks flightseeing tours and Denali flightseeing tours offer additional ways to experience the Alaska Range from above.
