Alaska Air Taxi

Alaska Air Taxi Services

Most of Alaska has no roads. That’s not an exaggeration — roughly 80% of the state is unreachable by vehicle. If you want to hike, fish, hunt, raft, or camp in the backcountry, you need a bush plane. That’s where an air taxi comes in.

Golden Eagle Outfitters provides air taxi services across remote Alaska, with flights departing from Fairbanks, Delta Junction, and Kotzebue . We fly backpackers, anglers, hunters, rafters, and campers into places no road can reach — and we bring them back when they’re ready. If you’re looking for a scenic tour rather than transportation, see our Alaska Flightseeing Tours page.

What an Alaska Air Taxi Does

An air taxi is not a tour. It’s transportation. You tell us where you want to go and when you want to come back, and we handle the flight. The difference matters because air taxis operate on your schedule, not a preset itinerary.

Wilderness Drop-Offs

We fly you and your gear into a remote location — a gravel riverbank, a tundra ridge, a lake shore, or a designated airstrip. You spend as much time there as you planned. We pick you up on the agreed-upon date and bring you back .

Gear and Cargo Transport

Bush planes carry more than people. We transport packs, rafts, coolers, hunting gear, fishing equipment, and camping supplies. The aircraft you fly depends on how much gear you’re bringing .

Custom Charters

If you have a specific destination in mind that isn’t on our standard routes, we can often accommodate it. Custom charters are common for photographers, researchers, and groups with unusual gear requirements.

Aircraft and Capacity

We fly two types of aircraft, and the right one depends on your group size and gear load.

Cessna 206

The Cessna 206 carries up to 5 passengers and works well for smaller groups, tighter landing zones, and trips where weight is a concern .

DeHavilland Otter

The DeHavilland Otter carries up to 10 passengers and offers more room for gear, making it the better choice for larger groups or expeditions with substantial equipment .

All flights are conducted by experienced Alaskan bush pilots. Safety is our first priority, and we fly year-round, weather permitting . For more on the national parks we access, see our Alaska National Park Tours page.

Who Uses Air Taxi Services

Air taxis serve a specific kind of traveler. These are the most common uses.

Backpackers and Hikers

Alaska’s best hiking isn’t near a road. We drop hikers at trailheads that don’t have trails — remote valleys, alpine passes, and tundra ridgelines. Pickups are scheduled for when you expect to finish .

Anglers and Hunters

Remote rivers and lakes offer fishing and hunting that’s inaccessible any other way. We transport anglers to fly-in fishing spots and hunters to remote camps. For fishing-specific trips, see our Alaska World-Class Fishing page.

Rafters and Float Trippers

Multi-day river expeditions require a drop-off at the put-in and a pickup at the take-out. We coordinate both ends of the trip so your focus stays on the river . See our Remote Wilderness Float Trips page for route options.

Campers and Base Camp Groups

If you’re setting up a base camp for photography, research, or extended exploration, we can fly your group and gear to a remote location and return for you later.

Photographers

Alaska’s light and landscape draw photographers from around the world. An air taxi gives you access to locations that would take days to reach on foot — if they’re reachable at all.

What to Know Before You Book

Alaska flying is different from commercial air travel. A few things are worth understanding before you schedule.

Weather Flexibility Is Essential

Alaska weather changes quickly, and safety always comes first. We may need to delay or reschedule a flight if conditions aren’t right. Most travelers plan a buffer day or two in their itinerary for this reason . We’ll communicate clearly about conditions and options.

Weight and Gear Limits

Every aircraft has weight limits. When you book, tell us how many people are flying and what gear you’re bringing. We’ll match you with the right aircraft and confirm what fits.

Booking in Advance

We recommend booking as early as possible, especially during peak summer months. Our aircraft are in high demand, and popular drop-off locations fill up quickly.

What to Bring

Dress in layers and pack for the conditions you’ll encounter. Bring a camera, sunglasses, and any medications you need. If you’re doing a remote drop-off, pack for the backcountry — there are no stores where you’re going.

Common Drop-Off Locations

We fly to locations across Alaska’s roadless backcountry. Popular destinations include:

  • Gates of the Arctic National Park & Preserve — Remote riverbanks and tundra landings

  • Kobuk Valley National Park — The Great Kobuk Sand Dunes and surrounding wilderness

  • Noatak National Preserve — River valley access for float trips

  • Cape Krusenstern National Monument — Beach landings near archaeological sites

  • Bering Land Bridge National Preserve — Tundra ridgelines and Serpentine Hot Springs

We also fly to locations outside the national park system. If you have a specific destination in mind, ask.

Why Fly With Golden Eagle Outfitters

We’re a family-run operation based in Kotzebue and Delta Junction . Our pilots have flown these routes for years, and we know the land, the weather, and the best places to land .

We’re not a large tour company — we’re a small team that takes pride in getting people into the Alaska we know. Our passengers consistently mention the skill of our pilots, the safety of our operations, and the personal attention they receive .

Questions About Alaska Air Taxi Services

How is an air taxi different from a flightseeing tour?

A flightseeing tour is a scenic flight with a preset route and often a landing for sightseeing . An air taxi is transportation — we fly you to a specific location, drop you off, and pick you up when you’re ready .

Can you drop us off and pick us up on different days?

Yes. That’s the standard arrangement for multi-day trips. We’ll coordinate the drop-off and pickup times with you when you book.

How much gear can we bring?

It depends on the aircraft and the number of passengers. The Cessna 206 carries up to 5 passengers, and the DeHavilland Otter carries up to 10 . Tell us what you’re bringing, and we’ll match you with the right plane.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Safety is our top priority. If conditions aren’t safe to fly, we’ll reschedule or adjust the plan. Many travelers plan an extra day or two in their itinerary to account for weather delays .

Do you fly year-round?

We operate year-round, weather permitting . Winter flights offer a different perspective on the Alaska landscape.

How far in advance should I book?

We recommend booking as early as possible, especially for summer travel. Popular drop-off locations and aircraft fill up quickly.

Do you fly to locations outside the national parks?

Yes. If you have a specific destination in mind, contact us. We can often accommodate custom drop-offs that aren’t on our standard routes.
